Bretonnia, officially the Kingdom of Bretonnia and often called the Land of Chivalry, is one of the major human realms in the Warhammer Fantasy setting (Old World).

It lies west of the Empire, bordered by the Grey Mountains to the east and the Great Ocean to the west. It's roughly the second-largest human nation after the Empire (and sometimes described as rivaling it in size, wealth, and power), with a landscape of fertile farmlands, rolling hills, forests, and mountains.

Bretonnia is a highly traditional feudal kingdom built on a rigid social hierarchy and the ideals of knightly chivalry, honour, and glory. Society revolves around:

  • A strict class system where peasants toil in abject poverty to support the nobility (they're heavily oppressed, taxed to extremes, and have few rights).
  • The knights and nobles form the military elite — regarded as the finest heavy cavalry in the Old World — who ride to battle on warhorses, seeking heroic deeds, jousts, quests, and to right wrongs.
  • The code of chivalry is central: vows of protection, courage, courtesy, and loyalty.

The kingdom worships the mysterious Lady of the Lake, a Grail-centric deity (or supernatural entity) who blesses worthy knights with visions and supernatural gifts. Knights undertake quests to prove their virtue, culminating in the search for the Grail, which grants immense power to those who succeed (like the legendary Grail Knights).

Bretonnia was founded centuries ago by Gilles le Breton (and his Grail Companions), who united the land against greenskin invasions with divine aid from the Lady.

Politically, it's decentralised: ruled by a king (the "Royarch," currently Louen Leoncoeur the Lionhearted in many timelines), with powerful dukes governing semi-independent dukedoms. There's little central bureaucracy — power flows through personal oaths of fealty.

It's both the Empire's closest ally and friendly rival — proud, honourable, but stubbornly traditional and resistant to change (no gunpowder armies, no widespread commerce/middle class like in the Empire). Their armies charge gloriously with lances lowered, while peasants provide expendable fodder.
